College Bowl Season

Happy New Year!

College Football Bowls

2009 is here. It's time to put the party hats away. Or is it?...

While watching the BCS bowl game between Florida and Oklahoma (notice I said bowl game not championship game), I am reminded of my college days when all the bowl games concluded on New Year's Day. It was awesome!! You had meaningful bowl games all day long while you nursed your hangover.

It is funny that none of the games are as meaningful because there is really no championship game. So why watch any bowl games on New Year's Day? College football needs a playoff system. Eight teams should play on New Years Day. Then 2 more weeks of playoff games to find the one true champion.

Okay. No more college playoff soapbox talk. Let's get back to the true topic on hand...beer. As I kicked back and watched the bowl game, I eased my football aggressions by drinking a Coopers India Pale Ale that we made in October. You can check out my entry about making this beer in the MakeBeer.net brewers blog.

We made this IPA using 1 kg of Dextrose instead of the 300 grams that is recommended on the kit. I was curious how it would turn out. My friend Mark Henry said that the Coopers IPA was his favorite Coopers beer kit and that is how he makes it. I have been test tasting it over the last couple of months. In November and December the beer was on the sweet side. Today the beer tasted great. The sweetness has finally dried out and brew has aged quite nice. I think a one more month aging and it will be just right. The Coopers India Pale Ale is designed along the line of an English India Pale Ale (think Fullers IPA) not a Pacific Northwest India Pale Ale.
